Let’s tap dance!
Our tap dancing classes are held on Monday and Wednesday nights at NICA, at 39-59 Green St, Windsor in Melbourne’s inner south eastern suburbs. Classes run for one hour and are structured around learning a tap dance routine to music over a 10 week term. The routines are choreographed to match the level of the class - from absolute beginners through to advanced. The aim is to have fun and learn classic tap steps with a modern twist! We mainly cater for adults, but welcome dance lovers of all ages.
Classes are $21 per class, with discounts available for paying by the term or for taking more than one class per week. And if you’ve never danced with us before your first class is free!
Monday 6.30pm
The Anns
Channelling the inimitable Miss Ann Miller, this class is for Miss Ginger students with some tapping experience and skills. The Anns are comfortable doing simple time steps, Fred Astaires along with the fundamental building blocks of tap dance – hit springs, glides, Buffalos and paddle and rolls. This class is taught by Miss Fleur.
Monday 7.30pm
The Jenis
The remarkable Jeni LeGon inspires our second Monday class. The Jenis are comfortable with simple time steps, fundamental building blocks of tap dance, along with the occasional slightly more challenging step thrown in to spice class up! This class is taught by Miss Fleur.
Wednesday 6pm
The Mabels
This class is for all of our junior Miss Ginger students. Named for Miss Mabel Lee, an amazing tapper who began performing at a young age and continued teaching into her 90s, The Mabels are students aged between 5 and 13 who want to start to learn or continue developing their tap dance skills without the pressure of exams. This class is taught by Miss Fleur and Miss Helen.
Wednesday 7pm
The Eleanors
Miss Eleanor Powell, one of Hollywood’s most versatile dancers, lends her name to this class. Miss Ginger students in The Eleanors are very comfortable with complex time steps and fast, complicated sequences. Taught by Miss Fleur, if you are comfortable with high speed pickups and the occasional wing, this is the tap dance class for you!
Wednesday 8pm
The Debbies
Miss Debbie Reynolds is our hero for this class. The Debbies are students who are relatively new to tap, or tappers who are comfortable keeping it sweet and simple. Taught by Miss Helen, this class will have you singin’ and dancin’ in the rain!
Thursday 7.40pm
The Veras
Honouring legendary screen tapper Vera-Ellen Rohe, the Veras are students who are absolute beginners dipping their toes in tap waters! Taught by Miss Helen, you’ll learn the fundamentals of tap - emphasis on the ‘fun’!
